candy for the spirit, at once magic and spectacular
to behold the sheets of color streaking over rodeo beach.
staring at the outlines of a former gun emplacement,
here between the byzantine tendrils of an ocean breeze …

as coolness opens up my forehead,
flippy trippy cypress trees standing guard like soldiers …
casting looks at fields of poppies,
each bright orange revelation glittering top to bottom …

peeling back a handkerchief,
i wipe the sweat now from my brow.
holding to binoculars i'm still beside hill 88,¹
'neath a sprawling steel blue patchwork sky that's dripping sunset …

a zillion swiftly changing, throbbing blobs of pink and purple
obfuscating for a time, incandescent spears and spines
lofting through the heavens!

¹rodeo beach and hill 88 are locations in the marin headlands of golden gate park, which for over one hundred years was a sprawling military base. happily these are now the staging grounds of beautiful sunsets.
